Spencer Ward, Member Of Class of '86 At Old San Pasqual School, Dies

Funeral services for Spencer Ward, 80, of Solana Beach, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday from Alhiser-Wilson Chapel. Mrs. Alma Ladd, minister of the Unity Church of Escondido, will officiate. A native of Rich Hill, Mo., he came to Escondido with his family in 1881 and settled in the Lake Hodges area, known at that time as Rancho Bernardo. He operated a dairy ranch near San Pasqual and lived at one time at Julian. He died Tuesday at his home. He was one of the last three members of the "Class of 1886 of the Old San Pasqual Grammar School." The "Class," in reality all of the pupils of the school on its closing day in 1886, was photographed by an itinerant photographer that June day. Life Magazine printed the picture and one taken more than half a century later. For many years, the "Class" members were guests of honor at the annual San Diego County Old-Timers picnic held by the late Henry Felton at his Bandy Canyon Ranch. Ward had moved from San Pasqual to Solana Beach 30 years ago. He was married to the former Eunice Davis at Los Angeles in 1912. Burial will be in Oak Hill Memorial Park, beside his wife who died in 1955. He is survived by a brother, Ray W. Ward of Solana Beach.

Ebenezer was probably the youngest of the three males aged 15-20 in Nathan Butterfield's 1840 U.S. Census household in Pomfret Township, Chautauqua County, NY. A FamilySearch extract of vital records for the state of Vermont says Ebenezer was born 12 Feb 1824 (in Benson, Rutland County, NY), and that his older brothers Nathan and William had been born 10 Oct 1820 and 21 Dec 1821 respectively.

Ebenezer Butterfield and Alma Lewis were reportedly married in 1845 in Erie County, PA, but had moved to Illinois by the time their third child, Chloe, was born in March of 1851. Five more children were born in Illinois between 1853 and 1865.

Ebenezer Butterfield served in the Civil War. He first enlisted from Roscoe (Winnebago County, IL) on 22 Apr 1861 (just days after the opening of the War) in Company F of Wisconsin's 1st Infantry Regiment, but was discharged from that regiment after only one month. He was about 38 years old. He then served five months in Company G of Illinois' 45th Infantry Regiment, enlisting from Roscoe, Illinois, on 17 Sep 1861 and serving from 20 November to 23 April, when he received a disability discharge. He enlisted again on 30 Sep 1864 in Company I of the 9th Illinois Cavalry and was mustered out on 15 Jun 1865. (Recruits to Company I of the 9th Illinois Cavalry were largely from Boone and Cook Counties. Ebenezer and one other recruit, George Bates, were the only members of the company whose residence was given as Roscoe, IL. Both were mustered in on 30 Sep 1864, and both were mustered out on 15 Jun 1865.)

Ebenezer and Alma and their family lived in Roscoe, IL, when the 1870 U.S. Census was taken. Nathan, Ansel, Orin and Alma were still at home. Their oldest surviving daughter, 22-year-old Chloe, lived in Roscoe as well, but boarded with the family of Alvin and Elizabeth Dodge.

By 1880, Ebenezer and Alma had separated. Alma and the three youngest children, Orin, Arthur and Alma, still lived together in Roscoe, IL. Ebenezer had become a physician and lived in the village of Roscoe in Graham Township, Graham County, Kansas. His son Nathan is listed as resident in the household as well, but as Nathan and his wife and baby boy are listed elsewhere in the 1880 U.S. census, it is possible that Nathan was just visiting his father at the time.

Ebenezer's wife, Alma Butterfield, is reported to have died in 1884, but she was listed as widowed/divorced in a Nebraska state census taken in early June, 1885. If she was divorced, rather than widowed, Ebenezer may have survived Alma.

In 1870, 22-year-old Chloe Butterfield lived in the household of Alvin and Elizabeth Dodge in Roscoe, IL. The Dodges had a 10-year-old daughter, Emma, and also boarded Chester Melanotho, 28, b NY or NJ, a clerk in a store.

By 1861 Ebenezer Butterfield and his family were in the Northern Illinois/Southern Wisconsin area. Roscoe Illinois is a small town in Northern Illinois midway between Rockford Illinois and Beloit Wisconsin. The following is his Civil War record;

Joseph L. Fisher first enlisted as a private in Company F of the 1st Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, a 90-day unit, on 22 Apr 1861 from Roscoe (Winnebago County), Illinois. (His brother Philip Fisher and cousin Ebenezer Butterfield enlisted in the same unit.) He received a disability discharge from the 1st WI Infantry on 22 July 1861. On 28 February 1862, he enlisted in Company A of the 12th Illinois Cavalry Regiment. His brothers, Philip and John, joined the same company on the same day. Joseph was promoted to full lieutenant on 27 January 1864 and mustered out on 2 Mar 1865. Service records retrieved by another researcher say that he first enlisted in the 1st Wisconsin Infantry on 19 Apr 1861, was discharged from that unit on 7 Sep 1861, then enlisted in the 12th Illinois Cavalry (Co. A) on 1 Dec 1861. He applied for an invalid pension on 7 May 1877, claiming that he had contracted rheumatism from exposure during the Red River campaign (on 15 May 1864?).
