The 1900 U. S. Census taken on June 6, 1900 shows Adam Shidell (age 57) born April 1843 in France to French-born parents is a farmer living in Sherry Twp., Wood Co., WI having emigrated in 1860. Living with him is his wife of 35 years, Lucinda M. Shidell (age 52) born September 1849 in Canada to Canadian-born parents. Nine of the eleven children born to Lucinda are still alive. Also there are their children: Ida B. Shidell (age 15) born September 1885; James A. Shidell (age 12) born October 1887; Dixon Shidell (age 10) born August 1889; and Blanch E. (age 9) born May 1891. All children were born in Wisconsin. Also living there is Lucinda's mother, Phebe Abbey (age 72) born June 1827 in Canada to French and Canadian parents.

Census taken on January 2, 1920, shows Fred Kerkow (age 38) born in Minnesota to Minnesota-born parents is a School Laborer renting his home and is living on Kidder Ave., Hope, Carpenter Twp., Steele Co., ND. Living with him is his wife, Mary M. Krekow (age 33) born in Minnesota to Minnesota-born parents. Also living there are his four unmarried children, all born in Minnesota to Minnesota-born parents: Clara K. Kerkow (age 14); Gertrude Kerkow (age 13); Arthur Kerkow (age 10); and Earl L. Kerkow (age 5).

North Dakota Reports - GROTH v. NESS, 65 N.D. 580 (1935)

November 16, 1923, G. C. Ness docketed a judgment in the district court against M. B. Groth and Mamie Groth. In March 1928 Martin Groth obtained title to the land involved herein. On October 21, 1933, Ness filed an affidavit of renewal of judgment with the clerk of the district court. On October 27, 1933, execution was issued and levy made upon the land involved, the sale being had on December 18, 1933. Ness bid in the land and received the certificate of sale. The sale was confirmed by the district court, and no redemption made.

S.-born parents and first married at age 21 is a Blacksmith owning his home worth $800 and is living on Kidder Ave., Hope, Carpenter Twp., Steele Co., ND. Living with him is his wife, Mary M. Krekow (age 42) born in Minnesota to Minnesota and German-born parents and first married at age 19. Also living there are his four unmarried children, all born to Minnesota-born parents: Arthur J. Kerkow (age 20) born in Minnesota; Earl L. Kerkow (age 15) born in Minnesota, an Assistant Janitor in a Public School; Orville R. Kerkow (age 6) born in North Dakota; and Caroline M. Kerkow (age 3-3/12) born in North Dakota.

Charles M. Copenhaver - Anna Higdem

Charles, son of Clifford and Sonherovia Copenhaver, was born in Salem, Marion County, Illinois, on November 7, 1875. He had three brothers and one sister. In 1902 Charles and his two brothers, Clifford and Frank, came to North Dakota and worked on farms. Charles worked and then purchased farmland in Melrose Township in the early 20's. In 1923 a brother, Clifford, died in a drowning accident. A sister, Mrs. Jorgenson and her two sons, Grant and Wayne, lived with Charles. In 1936 Charles married Anna Higdem. They had no children, but raised two nephews, Grant and Wayne Jorgensen. After retiring, in 1949, from farming, they moved into Hope. Charles passed away in June 1964, and Anna now resides in a nursing home in Hawley, Minnesota. They were members of the Methodist Church and Charles was active in the Masonic and Elks Lodges and also in politics, being chairman of the Steele County Democratic Party and North Dakota delegate to the National Convention in Philadelphia in 1948.

Earl and Edna Kerkow are the owners of the home. Art Kerkow, brother, was the former owner.

The abstract shows that A. E. Hubbard owned the lots in 1882-84. The date the house was built is unknown. It was known as the Taylor house. Other owners and dwellers were E. L. Taylor, George A. Warner, W. Robinson, F. M. Henderson, Charles F. Farrill, Fred Kerkow -1927, James Shidell, Art Kerkow.

A bathroom was added upstairs, and a service porch off the kitchen. In 1976 a bedroom and bathroom were added downstairs. Vinyl siding was put on in 1979.


Mrs. James Shidell lived in the community of Hope, Steele Co., ND in 1935.

Census taken on 1940 shows James Sheidle (age 52) born in Wisconsin, and 5 years ago was living in the Same, and with 6 years of School, does General Delivery and is renting his home for $15/month and is living in the City of Hope, Steele Co., ND. Living with him is his wife, Kittie Sheidle (age 50) born in Nebraska, and 5 years ago was living in the Same House, and with 4 years of College.
