Douglas Arthur "Doug" Jacks was born April 8, 1918, in San Diego, CA, and died July 28, 1944, near Granville, France, during WWII at age 26.  He is the son of John Douglas Jacks of Denver, CO, and Ethel M. Abbey of Belleville, Freedom Twp., Republic Co., KS. He enlisted when unmarried on August 4, 1941, at Los Angeles, CA, for 3 years. Had 2 years of college. San Diego High School Class of 1936. Was piloting a P-51A on August 22, 1943, at Zephyrhills AAF, FL, when he had a mid-air collision with a bird. Was a 1st Lieutenant when he was killed in WWII.

Mary Alice Young was born April 25, 1924, in Dade City, Pasco Co., FL. She is the daughter of Henry Clinton Young of Georgia and Varion Rosalee Jefferson of Thonotosassa, Hillsborough Co., FL.

Douglas Arthur Jacks

1Lt. Douglas Arthur Jacks was first reported missing on July 28, 1944, after a strafing mission near Granville, France. He had completed more than 70 missions in the 15th Fighter Group flying a P-47 and received several decorations. A San Diego native, Douglas, age 26 and married, graduated from San Diego High School in June 1936 and had attended San Diego State. He was working as a telephone company employee when he joined the military in August 4,  1941, in Los Angeles, CA. Repatriation funeral services was held for him at Benbough Mortuary on November 22, 1948.


The 1910 U. S. Census taken on April 28, 1910 shows Margaret A. Abbey (age 53) born in England to English-born parents with all 4 of the children born to her still alive is a widowed Head of Household owning her own home free of a mortgage and living at 3924 University Boulevard, 1st Ward, City of San Diego, San Diego Co., CA. Living with her is her five unmarried children: Eunice A. Abbey (age 30) born in Nebraska to English Canadian and English-born parents, who is a Clerk in the Post Office; Fred K. Garrett (age 22) born in England to English Canadian and English-born parents, who is a Home Carpenter; Mary E. Abbey (age 15) born in Kansas to English Canadian and English-born parents; Ethel M. Abbey (age 13) born in Kansas to English Canadian and English-born parents; and Lucy M. Abbey (age 9) born in Kansas to English Canadian and English-born parents.

John and Ethel were married about 1916 in California.

The WWI Draft Registration Report taken on June 5, 1917 shows John Douglas Jacks (age 24) is an Office Manager for the Armour Company and is living at 212 S. High, Albuquerque, NM. He has his wife and his mother to support.

Jacks (age 35) born in Colorado to English Canadian-born parents and first married at age 22 is a Lumber Yard Accountant owning his own apartment house worth $7,500 and living at 2448 Adams Street, City of San Diego, San Diego Twp., San Diego Co., CA. Living with him is his wife, Ethel M. Jacks (age 33) born in Kansas to English Canadian and English-born parents and first married at age 20 is a Land Lady at an Apartment Court. The 1945 Florida State Census taken 1945 shows Henry C. Young (43) born in Georgia with Grade 6 Education is a Grove Superintendent and is living in Dade City West, Pasco Co., FL. Living with him are the following, all born in Florida: Varion R. Young (age 41) with Grade 10 Education, a House Wife; Mary A. Jacks (age 22) with High School Education, a Dispatcher; Helen M. Young (age 18) with High School Education, a Time Keeper; V. June Young (age 12); Henry C. Young Jr. (age 8); and Sarah K. Young (age 2).

Margaret Ann (Kneale) (Garrett) Abbey died February 10, 1947, in San Diego, San Diego Co., CA, at age 89.

REPATRIATION SERVICES SET FOR HERO OF EUROPEAN WAR

Repatriation funeral services will be held in the Benbough Mortuary at 10 a.m. tomorrow for 1st Lt. Douglas A. Jacks, 26, USAAF, who was killed in Europe in July, 1946, after having completed more than 70 missions for the 15th Fighter Group. A native San Diegan, Lt. Jacks graduated from San Diego High School and attended State College. He was a telephone company employe when he enlisted in August, 1941. He won the Air Medal with two silver and seven bronze clusters, and the Purple Heart. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Mary A. Jacks, now of Dale, Fla.; his father, Douglas A. Jacks, who resides in Arcadia, and a sister, Mrs. Marie Jacks, of 3739 1/2 Udal St.


Ethel M. Abbey  was born January 28, 1897, in Kansas and died May 18, 1945, in San Diego, San Diego Co., CA, at age 47.

John Douglas Jacks died March 20, 1976, in San Diego, San Diego Co., CA, at age 82.


Victor "Vic" Smith

SMITH, Victor "Vic", 79, of Dade City, died Tuesday, March 8, 2005 at Sunbelt Health Care Center in Zephyrhills. Born July 22, 1925 in Clearwater, he was the son of Joseph Perkins Smith and Norma Devaneau Smith. He served in the military from 1943 until 1963 with the 8th Airforce Bomber Wing and participated in the D-Day invasion. After retiring from the military, he taught in the Pasco County School System from 1964 until 1980. He was a Dade City Citrus Grower from 1959 to the present. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Anson, Gregory, Clifford and Robert. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Mary Young Smith; a daughter, Vicki Bucy and her husband, Rick of Auburndale; a sister-in-law, June Farmer and her husband, Ray of Dade City; a brother-in-law, HC Young, Jr. of Dade City; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family received friends from 6-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 10, 2005 at the funeral home. Funeral services were held in the chapel of Hodges Family Funeral Home on Friday, March 11, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor David West officiating. Burial followed at Dade City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to Hernando-Pasco Hospice, 7066 Fort King Road, Zephyrhills, FL 33541.

Henry E. Bucy

BUCY, Henry E. "Sam," 88, of Zephyrhills, passed away January 2, 2005, in Zephyrhills. He is survived by one son, Rick D. Bucy and his wife, Vicki of Auburndale, Fla.; one brother, John Bucy of Lexington, Ky.; and three sisters, Daphene Hall of New Port Richey, Nita Houston and Vita Satterwhite, both of Murray, Ky. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bobbie E. Bucy in 2002. Mr. Bucy was born September 28, 1916 in Stewart County, Tenn. He came here in 1999 from Murray. Sam was a veteran of the Army, serving in World War II. He was an automobile detailer and a Methodist. Services and interment will be held at Bethel Cemetery in Buchanan, Tenn.

Henry E. (Sam) Bucy

The funeral for Henry E. (Sam) Bucy will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of J. H. Churchill Funeral Home. The Rev. Sammy Cunningham will officiate. Burial will follow in the Bethel Cemetery, Buchanan, Tenn. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday. Mr. Bucy, 88, Auburndale, Fla., formerly of Murray, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005, at 10:37 a.m. in Auburndale. An Army veteran, he served with the U.S. Army 904th Engineering Company in World War II from 1942-1945. He was awarded the Theater Ribbon with Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct Ribbon during his service in the European theater. Mr. Bucy operated a family-owned auto detail shop in Murray from 1961-1978. He was employed by Crouse Auto Brokers until 1999, when he moved to Florida. He was of Methodist faith and an avid sport fisherman and camper. His wife, Eloise Bucy, one sister, Charlene Westerman, and one infant brother all preceded him in death. Born Sept. 28, 1916, in Stewart County, Tenn., he was the son of the late Fines Bucy and Ora Lee Sykes Bucy. Survivors include one son, Rick Bucy and wife, Vicki, Auburndale, Fla.; one brother, John Bucy, Lexington; three sisters, Mrs. Nita Houston and Mrs. Vita Satterwhite, both of Murray, and Mrs. Daphene Hall, New Port Richey, Fla
