The Hayward Review, Hayward, Alameda Co., CA, Tuesday, October 11, 1910 BRIEF ITEMS OF LOCAL INTEREST James French swore to a complaint Friday against Donald McMillan, charging him with battery in Justice Prowse's court. French is one of the directors in the Orphan's Home at San Lorenzo and McMillan is the superintendent. French said that McMillan choked and otherwise abused him in trying to get hold of some evidence that French says he has to present to the directors at the forthcoming meeting looking to the discharge of McMillan, but he did not succeed, even if he did put the director out of the house. 1911: The Union Men's Orphanage has proved itself a paying institution. Hundreds of dollars worth of flowers are sold each month to Oakland florists. The children assist in the picking and care of the flowers. The Hayward Review, Hayward, Alameda Co., CA, Tuesday, March 14, 1911 ORPHANAGE SUPERINTENDENT TO FACE GRAVE CHARGES Daniel MacMillan, superintendent of the Union Men's Orphanage at San Lorenzo, was arrested Sunday afternoon by Constable Manuel Borge, of San Leandro, on complaint of Florence Jones, an eleven-year-old inmate of the orphanage, sworn to before Justice of the Peace, D. U. Toffelmier, of San Leandro. According to the story told the justice by the girl, her abuse by MacMillan commenced on August 28th last. She was accompanied to the office of the Justice of the Peace by her mother, Mrs. Daniel Jones. McMillan asserts his innocence of the charges brought against him by Florence Jones. He claims that Mrs. Marshall Johnson, a former matron at the orphanage, and James French, a former director, who, he says, wishes to be made superintendent, have instigated the charges. He also charges Mrs. Bissell, wife of the pastor of the Congregational Church, in San Leandro, with jealousy because he had refused to attend the church. He was arraigned before Judge Toffelmier in San Leandro and the hearing set for Thursday at 10 o'clock a. m. Monday morning a second charge was placed against McMillan. Lorena Tucker, a thirteen-year-old girl inmate of the orphanage, swore to a complaint before the District Attorney charging that on or about February 7th, of this year, McMillan attempted to commit a felonious act. The bail on this charge was fixed at $2000, the same as in the first case. Hayward Twice-a-Week Review, Hayward, Alameda Co., CA, Friday, May 26, 1911 McMillan Acquitted On Charge of Girls Daniel McMillan, charged with assault upon a young girl inmate of the Union Men's Orphanage, of San Lorenzo, of which he was superintendent, was Wednesday acquitted by a jury that sat before Judge Preweld. McMillan was once before accused of a similar offense, but was never brought to trial. He is a married man with a family, and sat in court holding his young children much of the time. Attorney P. M. Walsh, McMillan's attorney, for the second time fell under the displeasure of the court Wednesday for tardiness, and was fined $20 by Judge Prewell. The case was set to begin by 9:30 o'clock. Several days before Judge Prewell fined Walsh $5 for being late, but remitted the fine upon the attorney explaining that he had misunderstood the hour at which court would convene. But Judge Prewell announced that the fine imposed today must be paid. Roy and Jessie were married about 1916 in Unknown. "Sunshine" was a graduate of West Covina High School and her involvement in her community never faded. She offered coffee and dounuts to motorists during the gas crisis in the 70’s. she was an active member of the Jr J.C.’s, directed a children’s choir and taught Sunday School. Jillayne was recently honored by the City of Palm Springs when Dec 15, 2010 was declared Jillayne Hutchinson Day, in recognition of her efforts raising funds for the procurement of an additional trained police dog for the Palm Springs Police Department. "Goldilocks" was a typesetter for the San Gabriel Valley Tribune in her early professional life, but her love of music led her to her dream career as a radio announcer. The "Lady DJ" reined over the airways of Corona California. Jillayne is preceded in death by her mother Doris Hutchinson, father Vance Hutchinson, and nephew Trevor Hutchinson. She is survived by her son Travis Hutchinson, companion Jon Bruce, brothers Daniel Eshoo, Thomas Eshoo, Randall Hutchinson, their families and everyone whose lives she touched. Her request to those who knew and loved her; "Watch a Marx Brothers Movie - You can’t be sad watching Duck Soup." In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations me made in her name to the Palm Springs Police Department K-9 Unit.
