ALFRED KING CALLED HOME

After a lingering illness and more than six months of patient and painful suffering, Alfred King gave up the struggle last Sunday evening, September 8, to pass thru Glory's evening gate and walk in paradise.  Mr. King was born in the state of Wisconsin, April 9, 1851, and at the time of his death was 78 years, 4 months and 29 days old. When but a child of two years he came with his parents to Goodhue county, Minnesota, and later moved to Paynesville, where he first met, wooed, and on December 29, 1884, wed his now bereaved widow, at that time, Miss Hattie Maria Harris. After their wedding they moved to Wilder, in Jackson county, later moved to Windom in Cottonwood county and in 1892 moved to Redwood Falls, Redwood county, where they lived for ten years. In 1902 they moved to Nimrod in Wadena county, where they lived for 5 years and then came to Hewitt and Stowe Prairie township in 1907, and in 1917 they moved to their present farm in section 28, Bertha township, where the end came as the above stated.  There remains no doubt but that the hardships and toils of pioneer life so took its toll that when he became ill from the flu last winter, his system was too weak to withstand the strain and he finally had to surrender to the Grim Reaper. His death is the first in a family which consisted of father and mother and 13 children. He is survived by his wife, a sister and a brother. 13 children and 24 grandchildren. His brother, Walter King, resides at Redwood Falls and was present at the funeral, and his sister, Mrs. Nora George, of Velva, N. Dak., was also present during his last days and at the funeral. The funeral was held from the Bertha Church of God on Thursday, September 12, with the Rev. J.C. Youngblood as the officiating Clergyman. W. H. Miller, Alvin Bishop and C. L. Fox of Hewitt, and Chas Cluhm, Wm Becker, and John Stork of Bertha, intimate friends and neighbors, acted as pallbearers. The remains were interred in the cemetery just east of Hewitt village and there laid at rest amid the scenes and among the friends he loved so well. All the immediate relatives except Mrs. Lampley of Modesta, California, were present at the funeral. " How sweet to sleep where all is peace. Where sorrow cannot reach the breast. Where all life's idle throbbing cease. And pain is lulled to rest."
