Horatio Nelson was born March 12, 1810, in Otham, County Kent, England, and died March 15, 1872, in Emmett, St. Clair Co., MI, at age 62. He was the son of Richard Nelson and Mary Ann Vaughn (Bowhorn).

Angeline Reed was born July 4, 1811, in Monroe Co., NY, and died April 15, 1869, Emmet Twp., St. Clair Co., MI, at age 60 years, 4 months and 3 days. She was the daughter of Unknown.

Horatio Nelson and Angeline Reed were married.

  1. Mary Ann Nelson: Born August 14, 1836, in Lake Twp., Milwaukee Co., Wisconsin Territory; Died March 22, 1912, near Blue Hill, Webster Co., NE (age 75). Married October 30, 1852, in Lomira Twp., Dodge Co., WI, to William Albert Searle: Born June 6, 1832, in County Cornwall, England; Baptized July 1, 1832 in Broadoak (Braddock) Parish, County Cornwall, England; Died July 11, 1898, at his home southwest of Red Cloud in Red Cloud Twp., Webster Co., NE (age 66).

  2. Mary Jane Nelson: Born March 13, 1842, in Lake Twp., Milwaukee Co., Wisconsin Territory; Died June 20, 1918, in Red Cloud, Webster Co., NE (age 76). Married April 14, 1860, in Chesterfield, Macomb Co., MI, to Thomas Younglove: Born February 20, 1834, in New York; Died April 12, 1873, in St. Clair Co., MI (age 39).

  3. Darius Nelson: Born May 30, 1848 in Lomira Twp., Dodge Co., WI; Died January 15, 1929, in Fitzgerald Twp., Ben Hill Co., GA (age 80). Married November 11, 1880, in Scott Twp., Webster Co., NE, to Harriet Matilda Serl: Born June 3, 1861, in Dekalb Co., IL; Died September 4, 1929, in Fitzgerald Twp., Ben Hill Co., GA (age 68).

After Angeline (Reed) Nelson died, Horatio Nelson married Mrs. Cyrena Tibbetts.

Cyrena Briggs was born about 1848 in New York City, NY, and died Unknown. She was the daughter of Unknown of New York.

Cyrena Briggs was first married to Marcus A. Tibbets.

Marcus Aenthus Tibbets was born about 1823 in Vermont and died Unknown. He was the son of Unknown.

Marcus Aenthus Tibbets and Cyrena Briggs were married about 1851 in Michigan.

Marcus Aenthus Tibbets and Cyrena (Briggs) Tibbets had at least two children:

  1. Almanson A. Tibbets: Born about 1851 in Michigan; Died Unknown.

  2. Warren P. Tibbets: Born about 1857 in Armada, Macomb Co., MI; Died August 7, 1890, in East Tawas, Sanilac Co., MI, due to being crushed under logs. Married August 9, 1876, in Memphis, Macomb Co., MI, to Anna M. "Annie" Warner: Born Unknown in Richmond, MI; Died Unknown.

Horatio Nelson and Cyrena (Briggs) Tibbets were married November 25, 1869, in Riley, St. Clair Co., MI.

After Marcus Aenthus Tibbets died, Cyrena (Briggs) (Tibbets) Nelson married Unknown McKibba.

Unknown McKibba was born Unknown and died before 1880 in Michigan

The 1840 U. S. Census taken on 1840 shows Horatio Nelson is living in Lake Twp., Milwaukee Co., Wisconsin Territory. 1 Male: 30 to 39 (Horatio); 2 Males 5 to 9 =2 (unknown); 1 Female: 20 to 30 (Angeline); and 1 Female 0 to 5 (Mary Ann).

Prior to Wisconsin statehood on May 29, 1848, Milwaukee County was part of the Territory of Wisconsin and was very large and extended westward to include what would eventually become Dodge County (among others).

The 1850 U. S. Census taken on September 10, 1850, shows Haritia Nelson (age 40) born in England with real estate of $600 is a Farmer and is living in Lomira Twp., Dodge Co., WI. Living with him is his wife, Angeline Nelson (age 38) born in New York. Also living there are three children, all born in Wisconsin: Mary Nelson (age 14); Jane Nelson (age 9); and Darius Nelson (age 2). Henry Hibard, a Farmer, also lives there.

On September 29, 1852, Carter W. Thompson and Wife sold by Warranty Deed for $500 to William Serl, Jr. the N 1/2 of the SE 1/4 of Section 4, T 13 N, R 17 E (Lomira Twp., Dodge Co., WI).

On September 29, 1852, Horatio Nelson and Wife sold by Warranty Deed for $800 to Henry M. Hibbard the SW of the NE 1/4 of Section 3, T 13 N, R 17 E (Lomira Twp., Dodge Co., WI). Also E 1/2 of N of NE 3 13 17 W 1/4 of E 3 also a strip on E Side of NE  NW and run W. to the Center of Milwaukee Road 3.13.17 SE  SW  34 Byron

In December Serl 1852 the family removed from Dodge Co., WI, 10 miles from Fond du Lac, to St. Clair Co., MI.

On February 3, 1853, William Serl and Wife sold by Warranty Deed for $550 to Wm. Broom the N 1/2 of the SE 1/4 of Section 4, T 13 N, R 17 E (Lomira Twp., Dodge Co., WI).

The 1860 U. S. Census taken on June 5, 1860, shows Haritio Nelson (age 50) born in Ireland with real estate of $1,000 and personal estate of $215 is a Farmer and is living in Chesterfield Twp., Macomb Co., MI. Living with him are: Angeline Nelson (age 48) born in New York; and Derias Nelson (age 12) born in Wisconsin.

The 1860 U. S. Census dated June 18, 1860, shows Phillip Keating (age 40) born in Massachusetts with real estate of $400 and personal estate of $307 is a Farmer and is living in Attica Twp., Lapeer Co., MI. Living with him are: Matilda Keating (age 22) born in Canada West; Maria Keating (age 6) born in Michigan; Felix B. Keating (age 3) born in Michigan; and Mary A. Keating (age 1) born in Michigan.

The 1860 U S. Census taken on June 18, 1860, shows William Sorrell (age 27) born in England with real estate of $600 and personal estate of $260 is a Farmer and is living in Attica Twp., Lapeer Co., MI. Living with him are: Mary A. Sorrell (age 23) born in Wisconsin; Matilda E. Sorrell (age 2) born in Michigan; and Phoebe J. Sorrell (age 9/12) born in Michigan.

Leigh Larson note: William Sorrell (William Searle) and Matilda Keating (Matilda Searle) are brother and sister.

Military Service: Between 1863 - 1866 Civil War soldier, five months in Andersonville prison. He enlisted on February 13, 1863 as a Sergeant in Company L, 8th Regiment, Michigan Cavalry. Reported missing in action on August 3, 1864 in Marietta, GA, on Stoneman's Raid. Was held at Andersonville Prison, and in Charleston, Sc and in Florence, SC. He was released in December 1865.

Angeline (Reed) Nelson died April 15, 1869, St. Clair Co., MI, at age 57.

Horatio Nelson and Cyrena (Briggs) Tibbetts were married November 25, 1869, in Riley, St. Clair Co., MI.

The 1870 U. S. Census taken on July 22, 1870, shows William Serl (age 38) born in England to foreign-born parents with real estate of $600 and personal estate of $150 is a Farmer and is living in Kingston Twp., Tuscola Co., MI. Living with him is Mary A. Serl (age 34) born in Wisconsin with a foreign-born father, who is Keeping House. Five children are also living there, all born in Michigan with a foreign-born father: Matilda E. Serl (age 12); Phebee J. Serl (age 10); William H. Serl (age 7); Mary A. Serl (age 3); and Joseph C. Serl (age 1).

About May 1877 the Serl family removed to Webster Co., NE.

The 1880 U. S. Census taken on June 7, 1880, shows Wm. Searl (age 47) born in England to English-born parents is engaged a Farmer living in Stillwater Precinct, Webster Co., NE. Living with him is his wife Mary A. Searl (age 43) born in Wisconsin to England and New York-born parents who is Keeping House. Five of their children are also living at home, all born in Michigan to England and Wisconsin-born parents: Matuilda E. Searl (age 22); Wm. H. Searl (age 17); Mary A. Searl (age 13); Joseph C. Searl (age 11); and Ida May Searl (age 6).

The 1885 Nebraska State Census taken on June 18, 1885, shows William Serl (age 48) born in England is living in Still Water Pct., Webster Co., NE. Living with him are: Margeret Serl (age 48) born in Wisconsin; William H. Serl (age 22) born in Michigan; Mary A. Serl (age 18) born in Michigan; Joseph C. Serl (age 16) born in Michigan; Idens Serl (age 11) born in Michigan; and Francis Serl (age 6) born in Nebraska.
