TIMELINE The Portland Press Herald, Portland, ME, May 24, 1994 OBITUARY MARVIN D. HICKS TROMBONIST, MAGAZINE AD EXECUTIVE CAPE ELIZABETH - Marvin D. Hicks, 93, a magazine advertising executive who played slide trombone in the United States Navy Band under John Philip Sousa, died Sunday at Viking Nursing Home. He lived at 60 Wildwood Drive and was a summer resident of Squirrel Island. Mr. Hicks worked 25 years for U.S. News and World Report magazine, in New York City and in Cleveland, retiring in 1966. When the late David Lawrence started the magazine in 1941, he hired Mr. Hicks as a corporate advertising executive. Before that, Mr. Hicks was an advertising executive with Time magazine and Life magazine during the 1930s. During World War I, Mr. Hicks was a slide trombonist in the U.S. Navy Band. That band was at that time under the direction of John Philip Sousa, the composer and band leader. He was a trombonist and violin player in dance bands in Chicago during the 1920s. He married the former Elizabeth Junge in 1946 in Cleveland and since then had spent summers on Squirrel Island, a community of about 100 summer homes in the town of Southport. He was president for 15 years of the Squirrel Island Chapel Association and a longtime volunteer fire chief. In 1993, he and his wife donated a new fire truck to the island. ``He was devoted to the island,'' said Elizabeth Draper, a longtime friend who was an organist at Squirrel Island Chapel. ``He was our oldest resident. Until recently he would always meet the boat (from Boothbay Harbor), and know who came on and who was leaving.'' Mr. Hicks enjoyed photography and used his camera to record many of the people and events of Squirrel Island. He often gave slide shows at the island's town hall, showing his pictures of the island as well those taken during his many world travels. ``They were called Hicks' Flicks,'' said Draper. ``He took pictures of the hurricanes and the fires, anything that happened on the island. It was a vast collection.'' While in New York City, Mr. Hicks was active in the 1948 Republican presidential campaign of Gov. Thomas E. Dewey. He was active with the Cleveland Symphony, the Cleveland Skating Club, Western Reserve Historical Society and various musical organizations. Hood River News. Hood River, Hood River Co., OR, November 1983 Carl Engel Carl Engel, 71, a familiar figure driving his steam traction engine for years in Hood River parades, died at the Hood River Memorial Hospital, Saturday, Nov. 19, apparently of a heart attack. Recitation of rosary was at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, at the Anderson Funeral Home, and mass of Christian burial was scheduled at St. Mary's Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 23, with Father Richard Conway officiating. Private committal will be in White Salmon Cemetery. Carl Engel was born Aug. 13, 1912 in Hebron, Neb., to Henry and Agnes Engel, and he grew up in Nebraska, working on the family farm. In 1934 he moved to Hood River to work for Howell Brothers Machine Shop, which he and Roy DeHart later purchased. He and his wife Fonda were married Dec. 16, 1953, in Hood River. The two partners in Engel and deHart Machine Shop built a new plant on Tucker Road, moving from their old quarters on Fourth Street near the Diamond Fruit cannery complex. They sold the business that is now Custom Aluminum to Larry Dinsmoor. Mr. Engel was a collector of antique farm machinery, and he retained a "partnership" with DeHart long after his retirement - this one in operating their popular steam traction engine in parades not only here but in other communities. They restored the wood-fired engine and outfitted it to run on asphalt streets. A sergeant in the Air Force during World War II, he was a member of the Veterans of Forgeign Wars Post 1479 and the Elks Lodge. Survivors are his wife, Fonda, 3494 Avalon Drive; and three brothers, Henry of Milwaukie, Melvin of Soap Lake, Wash., and John of Dayton, Ohio. Contributions in his memory can be made to the St. Mary's Church building fund.
