William H. Barkman – A well known blacksmith of Polo, Illinois and one of its highly esteemed citizens, was born near Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland on February 6, 1831, a son of David and Rebecca (Guyton) Barkman, who were also natives of that county, the former born in Boonsboro in 1801, the latter in 1808. The father, who was a shoemaker by trade, came west in 1863 soon after the battle of Gettysburg, his place having been stripped of its stock and fences by the contending armies passing to and fro continuously, “leaving nothing but the house.” On reaching Ogle County he bought a farm of forty acres at Franklin Grove, where he continued to make his home until called from this life in 1875, while on a visit to our subject’s in Polo. He retired from his trade on coming to this state and devoted his attention exclusively to agricultural pursuits. His father was a soldier of the war of 1812. The mother of our subject died in Ogle County in 1876. There were ten children in the family of whom he is the third in order of birth but only seven are now living.
William H. Barkman received a district school education, walking each day three miles to the school house. At the age of fourteen he began his business career by working for neighboring farmers and was thus employed for four years, after which he learned the blacksmith’s trade at Beaver Creek, where he worked for a few months. The spring of 1853 witnessed his arrival in Illinois making the journey by railroad to Rockford whence he soon drifted to Grand Detour. There he secured employment in the Andrews Plow Works but in the fall of the same year went to Buffalo Grove, the “Old Town,” where he worked for Mr. Curtis until the first of the following year. Since then he has made his home in Polo, his first employment here being with Major Aplington, who was in charge of railroad construction. He remained with that gentleman until the railroad was completed and then entered the blacksmith shop of Mr. Frost where he worked as a journeyman until 1857 when he bought out his employer and has since engaged in business on his own account with marked success. In 1861 he built his present shop where the anvil has rung a merry tune for over thirty-eight years.
At Mt. Pleasant, Washington County, Maryland Mr. Barkman was married in July 1851 to Miss Catherine Bombarger who was born in that county on January 1, 1830, a daughter of Moses and Catherine (Betz) Bombarger. Eight children have been born of this union: Annie, now the wife of Harry Hearst, a railroad employee in Colorado, by whom she has two children, Charles and Alice, Elhannen, a traveling salesman for a Chicago house, residing in Decatur, Illinois, who married Rena Hill of Tama City, Iowa and has three children: Nina, Inda and Robert; Laura Virginia, who is the widow of Reuben Wilder and has four children, Nellie, William, Eva and Harry; Ida, wife of William Poffenbarger, a blacksmith of Polo, by whom she has one child, Goldie; William E., who is in the shop with his father; Della, widow of Edward Farringer; Alice, deceased; and Mollie, wife of William Filson, a cutter in a shoe factory in Dixon, Illinois.
Socially, Mr. Barkman is an active and prominent member of the Odd Fellows lodge of Polo has filled all its chairs and has been a delegate to the grand lodge four or five times. The Republican Party has always found in him a stanch supporter of its principles and he has been an influential member of the board of supervisors one term and city council for several terms. He has witnessed the entire growth and development of Polo and can well remember when this region was all wild prairie with only a railroad grade passing through the present enterprising little city. He has been an important factor in advancing its moral and material welfare and has ever been recognized as one of its valued and useful citizens. There is no one still living in Polo who was here when he located in the village, for the pioneers are fast passing away.

The first name of the present Town of Warren was Courtland, which name was suggested by Mr. A. L. Brink to Charles Cole, who was present at the meeting of the Commissioners when the different towns were first named. The first post office in the Township of Courtland was named Warren by Alexander Burnett, and was named after Burnett's native place, which was Warren, Ohio. Afterwards, at the request of a majority of the people of Courtland, it was changed to Warren in 1865.
Thomas M. Blake, a resident of Blair Co., PA, enlisted October 24, 1861, in Huntingdon Co., PA, for a period of nine months. Private, Company F, 125th Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry.
The One Hundred and Twenty-fifth Infantry was recruited in Blair and Huntingdon counties, was mustered into the U. S. service at Harrisburg on Aug. 16, 1862, for a nine months' term, and moved to Washington the same day. On March 24, 1863, the regiment was assigned to the 2nd brigade, 2nd division, 12th corps and posted at Acquia Creek. It was active at Chancellorsville, then returned to Acquia Creek, Stafford Co., VA, for a few days, and was mustered out at Harrisburg, Dauphin Co., PA on May 18, 1863.

Regimental History PENNSYLVANIA ONE HUNDRED and TWENTY FIFTH INFANTRY (Nine Months)
One Hundred and Twenty-fifth Infantry. - Col., Jacob Higgins; Lieut.-Col., Jacob Szink; Maj., John J. Lawrence. This regiment, recruited in Blair and Huntingdon counties, was mustered into the U. S. service at Harrisburg on Aug. 16, 1862, for a nine months' term, and moved to Washington the same day, where it was assigned by Gen. Casey to a provisional brigade under Col. Higgins. It was first posted at Hunter's Chapel, later at Fort Bernard, Va., on guard duty, and on Sept. 6, moved to Rockville, where it was united with the army and became a part of the 1st brigade, 1st division, Banks' corps, later commanded by Gen. Mansfield and Gen. Williams. At Antietam the regiment was closely engaged, the total loss being 150. Five color-bearers were killed, but the men fought with the courage and steadiness of veterans. The regiment encamped at Pleasant valley, Maryland and Loudoun heights, and then moved to Fredericksburg, but not in time for the battle. It returned to Fairfax Station, joined in the "Mud March," and then went into winter quarters near Stafford Court House. On March 24, 1863, the regiment was assigned to the 2nd brigade, 2nd division, 12th corps and posted at Acquia creek. It was active at Chancellorsville, then returned to Acquia creek for a few days, and was mustered out at Harrisburg on May 18-19,1863.

Death of an Old Soldier.
D. H. Lamberton died this morning at 10 o'clock at his home over the Salvation Army barracks, after being sick only since last night. Mr. Lamberton complained of not feeling well last evening and immediately retired. During the night he felt worse and kept growing weaker until this morning, when he passed away. Mr. Lamberton was born Nov. 12, 1839, in New York city, and moved here 36 years ago, where he has since resided. He was married to Miss Julia Fletcher, who survives him, as does one son, Arthur, of this city. He also leaves to mourn his loss one sister, Mrs. Young, of Winslow. Mr. Lamberton was an old soldier, belonging to the 96th Ill. Vol., and served through the four years of the war. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon from the Salvation Army barracks and the arrangements will be taken care of by the Hohn A. Davis post, of this city. Rev. L. C. Burling will officiate.

Delia Lamberton married James Gillapp on October 24, 1904, in Stephenson Co., IL. James Gillapp was born April 14, 1874, in Freeport, Stephenson Co., IL, and died May 5, 1946, in General Hospital No. 1, Kansas City, Jackson Co., MO, at age 72. At the time of his death he was married to Estelle T. Gillapp (age 71). Stella Tingler: Born about 1888. In the 1920 U. S. Census, James Gillapp was shown as being divorced. Married June 2, 1923, in Jackson Co., MO. James E. Gillapp married Lydia Benson May 18, 1894, in Rock Island Co., IL.
Henry Gillapp enlisted in Company B. of the 11th Infantry during the Civil war in the early 1860's. He entered and mustered out from Freeport, Illinois. A Johnathon "Knittle" also served in the same company and from the same city. It is possible that Henry and John were friends and that John was somehow related to Susan and introduced Henry to Susan his future wife.
Henry enlisted in the Civil War on July 30, 1861. He was wounded in the left shoulder, the neck, the right elbow and the ankle at the battle of Fort Donalson, Tennessee on Feb. 15, 1862 and was given a disability discharge. He re-enlisted as a private in Company A, 2nd Regt. Colorado Calvary vols. on Oct. 19th 1863. He was honorably discharged at Fort Leavenworth Kansas on the 23rd day of Sept. 1865. His war records show that he was born in Mifflin County, PA.
Henry and Susan were married in 1866 in Freeport, Illinois. There is no record of Gillapp found in PA or Illinois for 1880 census. Henry and Susan may have been traveling at this time toward Illinois during the 1870 census. They did appear in the 1880 Census for Rock Island, with their children, Emily - 3, Eliza Ann - 12, William H. -10, Edward - 7, and James E. - 5. It shows the birthplace of Henry, Susan and their children as PA. The census is most likely in error on the birthplace of some of the children. Census takers were not always accurate in their notations on the census in those days. The family later moved back to Freeport where Susan died on March 10, 1890. Her obituary indicated the family was living in Freeport.
Later in 1900, Henry appeared in the 1900 census for Rock Island, with his children , Edward -25, Rosala - 16, and Charles - 14. Henry shown as a widower worked as a laborer. The census showed PA as the birthplace for Henry and his parent. Edward, Rosala and Charles were listed as born in Illinois and their parents in PA.
May 27, 1902, the Rock Island Argus reported, "James Gillapp, an old man living in a shanty-boat with his two sons at the west end of the city, died last night. He was 67 years of age and will probably be buried at the expense of the County. Death was due to neglect and old age. Dr. Foster, county physician, says he sent the ambulance twice to the old man's habitation to have him removed to St. Anthony's Hospital, where he could be properly cared for, but in each instance the sons refused to allow his removal." This article obviously refers to Henry since a Certification of Death from Rock Island County shows Henry's date of death as being May 26, 1902 at the age of 67 in Rock Island. It also shows that he was a widower and worked as a laborer and died of infirmities of old age.
On May 29th, 1902 the Rock Island Argus reported, "The remains of John (Henry) Gillapp who died Monday night, were this morning shipped to the former home in Freeport for burial. They were accompanied by the daughter of the deceased, Mrs. Emily Horton." Henry was buried in Freeport, Illinois. Birth Certificate for James says born in Pittsburgh PA. William gave information. Keneth Gillapp said his father Keneth Jr. indicated that Henry changed his name from Gillaspie or Gillespie. He married Susanna Knittle, daughter of Daniel Knittle & Sarah A. Mease, 1866 in Freeport, Stephenson County, Illinois. Born Mar 1850 in Pennsylvania. Died 10 Mar 1900 in Freeport IL. Buried in Freeport City Cemetery. Died at age 49 years of Consumption (TB of the Lungs). She originated from Pennsylvania and resided in Illinois for 35 years.

Death of Robt. Blair
Robt. Blair was born in Nova Scotia June 26, 1827 and died at his home here February 11, 1906 aged 78 years 7 months and 16 days. He moved with his parents to Illinois in his fourteenth year and remained there until 1889 when he came to Iowa and settled in Fontanelle where he remained until his death. He was married in 1846 to Miss Marinda McComber, now deceased. He was married the second time in 1862 to Miss Emma Moore, he was the father of thirteen children, eleven of whom survive him as follows: Mrs. May Baccus, Lewis Blair, Mrs. Adelia Haines, William Blair, Mrs. Ella Brink, Mrs. Celia Ford, Mrs. Minnie Bryant, Mrs. Rose Hatfield, Elmer Blair, Roy Blair and Mrs. Grace Jarvis who with thirty one grandchildren and five great grandchildren are left to mourn their loss. He united with the Methodist Episcopal Church at the age of nineteen and remained a faithful member through all the years. Filling important places of trust in its management, having been a steward for years and a class leader for forty five years, during nineteen of which he had charge of the class in this place. He was a man of strong constitution, as his age testifies, but for nearly two years he has been steadily failing, and though he suffered intensely at times, the end came very peacefully Sunday evening at 10:05 o'clock. The funeral services were held at the Methodist Church at 1:30 PM today conducted by Rev. W. H. Doyle assisted by Rev. E. E. Ilgenfritz of Creston, a former pastor of this church and an old friend of Mr. Blair. He had made all plans for the funeral having selected the text for the sermon and the hymns to be sung. The exercises at the cemetery were in charge of the Masonic Lodge of which Order he has long been a member. A good man has gone. Earth is poorer, but Heaven will be richer.

Death of Mrs. Emma Blake
Emma Mingus was born May 17, 1841 in Willsburg, West Virginia and was called to her reward May 4, 1927 at Fontanelle, Iowa. Having attained the goodly age of 85 years, 11 months and 17 days. On January 22, 1861 she was united in marriage with A. Robert Blair of Oxford, Illinois, where Mr. Blair was engaged in mercantile business. In 1871 the family moved to New Windsor, Illinois, remaining until 1882, when they came to Fontanelle to spend the last years of their lives and where Mr. Blair was engaged in the business of harness making until he died in 1906. She was the devoted mother of 7 children, Mrs. Rose Hatfield, of Kansas City, Mo.; Mrs. Minnie Bryant, of Silver City, Iowa; Mrs. Celia Ford of Los Angeles, Calif; Mrs. Grace Jarvis of Fontanelle; Mrs. Ella Brink of Fontanelle; Roy Blair of Fontanelle, who passed away in 1912 and Elmer Blair also of Fontanelle, who departed this life April 19, 1926. Also raised four step-children, Will Blair of Viola, Ill., Mrs. Della Haines, Minneapolis, Minn., and Mrs. Mary Bachus of Davenport, Iowa. She also leaves to mourn her departure 22 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. In 1908 Mrs. Blair was united in marriage with Thomas M. Blake, a civil war veteran, who passed away in 1912. She was a member of the Woman's Relief Corps, G.A.R. Circle and filled the position of Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, before the family moved to Fontanelle. As a member of the Methodist Episcopal church for 60 years she gave every evidence of a life of devotion to the Lord and Master and to the church as long as her health permitted. Mrs. Blake's many months of pain and suffering peacefully ended May 4, 1927, at her home her in Fontanelle. For several years her health has been failing and the end was not unexpected. All through these days and nights of intense suffering and knowing they could be alleviated in only one way, Mrs. Blake still maintained a kindly interest in her friends and the current affairs of the community. Due to the untiring efforts faithful service and unselfish devotion of her daughter, Mrs. Ella Brink, to the life of Mrs. Blake, many years were added. In the last several months her life, which were spent entirely in bed, Mrs. Brink was constantly at her mother's bedside administering every aid and comfort. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock conducted by Rev. Owen Smith of Des Moines, a former pastor at Fontanelle. The body was laid to rest in the Fontanelle cemetery.

Wallace Shill
WALLACE SHILL. Some of the most prosperous farmers in the entire State of Kansas are today found in Pawnee County, where only twenty or twenty-five years ago a handful of settlers were struggling for the bare necessities of life. One of these prosperous citizens with his farm in Ash Valley Township is Wallace Shill. Mr. Shill was more of a witness than an active participant in the very early pioneer struggles in Pawnee County, since he was only seven years of age when his parents came to this region in 1878.
William H. Shill died in Pawnee County in 1888, at the age of sixty-six. He married Mary Zimmerman, who was born in New York State and died about 1898, aged sixty-nine. Their children were: Martha, wife of Eugene Teal, of Decatur County, Iowa; Marinda, who died in Leadville, Colorado, wife of Robert Newton; Rosetta, who died in Illinois, the wife of John Potter; Nettie, who married Fred Keast and died in Pawnee County; Ruth, wife of Thomas Keast of Larned; Etta, wife of Henry Hugg of Larned; Hattie, wife of Jerome Hearn, and she died in Oklahoma; Luther, who died in Pawnee County unmarried; and Wallace, who was the youngest of the family.
Wallace Shill was born in Jo Daviess County, Illinois, November 17, 1871, but nearly all his education was acquired in Pawnee County and it was limited in amount and quality. He was a pupil of the old Antone School, one of the pioneer schoolhouses of the county. He continued to live at home with his parents, was seventeen when his father died, and the old homestead has always kept its hold upon his affections. As a farmer he has followed in the footsteps of his father in the matter of wheat and stock raising, but quite early in his career took up the breeding of Shire horses and has done a good deal for the locality in raising the grade of horses. For a time he was associated in the business of stock raising and farming with his brother. They placed many new improvements upon the farm, including the cottage residence of four rooms now occupied by Mr. Wallace Shill and family, a barn 40x56 feet, a granary with 4,000-bushels capacity and a number of other structures as needed. Mr. Wallace Shill has added a quarter section to the old farm, and now has 480 acres with about 380 acres under the plow. He estimates that the best acre of wheat he ever had yielded twenty-five bushels, and the best seasonal average per acre was about the same amount. He has had a quiet but effective career, and has participated in politics only to the extent of casting his ballot. He has always believed in the principle of protection for American industries, but in 1916 he supported Mr. Wilson for president.
On June 6, 1906, Mr. Shill married Miss Margaret Dugan. Her father, Michael Dugan, who was born and married in Ireland, came from New Hampshire to Kansas, arriving in this state January 1, 1877. His homestead in Ash Valley Township was in section 4, township 20, range 17. He died soon after coming to Kansas. The maiden name of his wife was Margaret Daley and she also died in Pawnee County. Their children were: Minnie, wife of Barney Leffert, of Argus, Indiana; Mary, wife of Lloyd McNamee, of Fort Worth, Texas; John, of Pawnee County; Thomas, of Illinois; Hugh, who lives at Hutchinson, Kansas; Michael, of Kinsley, Kansas, and Mrs. Shill, who was born August 10, 1879, in Pawnee County, and has thus spent practically all her life there. Mr. and Mrs. Shill have three children, Dallas, Margaret and Phyllis.
