She is the daughter of Joseph Frank Cherney of Czechoslovakia and Katherine/Catherine A. Hussler/Hoslar of Czechoslovakia.

Living with him is his wife Ida D. Willer (age 32) born in Wisconsin to Wisconsin-born parents and first married at age 18. Also living there are their children: V. Robert Willer (age 12), born in North Dakota; Beverly R. Willer (age 9) born in North Dakota; Cora E. A. Willer (age 8) born in North Dakota; and twins, Douglas T. Willer and David A. Willer (age 3-9/12) born in Missouri.

Vess R. Miller

Vess R. Miller, 42, 1613 Welsby Ave., died unexpectedly early this morning. Mr. Miller became ill while driving for the Yellow Cab Co. He went home and later was taken by ambulance to St. Michael's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival at 4:25. After retiring from the Army on Feb. 29, Mr. Miller and his family stayed briefly with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ira E. Miller, at Granton, and then came to Stevens Point. They were staying temporarily at the Welsby avenue address while waiting to move on April 15 to a farm which they planned to purchase in this area. Mr. Miller had been in apparent good health until his death. He was born at Beulah, N. D., on Aug. 6, 1917, and spent his boyhood there. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in North Dakota and then served in the Army from 1934 to 1937. After his discharge he worked in the Manitowoc shipyards and later at the Brooklyn (N. Y.) Navy Yard. In 1943 he re-entered the Army and served until his retirement. He was a sergeant major at the time he left the Army but retired as a captain, the rank which he held until 1954. Mr. Miller was married at Pascagoula, Miss., on July 20, 1940, to the former Vlasta Churney, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Patrick, 16, at home; an adopted daughter, Mrs. Howard (Carol) Young, Jackson, Ky.; his parents; two sisters, Mrs. Everett (Beverly) Meek, Nashua, Mont., and Mrs. Cora Guy, Granton, and four brothers, David, Milwaukee, and Douglas, Chicago, who are twins, Ira Jr., Kansas City, Mo., and Richard, Anchorage, Alaska. Funeral arrangements are pending at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Granton.

Vess R. Miller

Vess R. Miller, 42, retired Army captain and former Manitowoc resident, died unexpectedly early Monday morning at Stevens Point. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Methodist Church, Granton, with burial at 3 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc, The Otto Oas Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, will provide military rites at graveside. Mr. Miller was born Aug. 6, 1917, at Beulah, N. D. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in North Dakota and served in the U. S. Army from 1934 to 1937. Following discharge, he was employed by Manitowoc Shipbuilding Inc., and Brooklyn Navy Yard, N. Y. In 1943 he re-entered the Army and served until retirement. Vess is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc , Manitowoc Co., WI. His parents are also buried there.

Joseph Frank Cherney, 79, retired mason contractor, died unexpectedly at his home 1223 Philippen St., Manitowoc, just before noon Tuesday. He had a coronary attack.

Chase-Miller

Miss Sarah Jane Chase was married to Patrick Douglas Miller at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. Donald Stannard performed the rite at Wesley Methodist Church, Manitowoc. The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Marie Chase of Rt. 2, Two Rivers, and the late Wilford Chase. The groom is the son of Mrs. Vlasta A. Miller of 1216 S. 10th St., Manitowoc, and the late Capt. Vess Miller. Maid of honor was Judy Chase, sister of the bride. Best man was Howard Young, brother-in-law of the groom. The couple was honored with a luncheon for the immediate families. After a wedding trip to Canada, they will reside at 1307 Marshall St., Manitowoc. The bride attended Mishicot High School and her husband attended Lincoln High School, Manitowoc. Both are employed at Mirro Aluminum Co.

Howard Young has been promoted to manager of industrial engineering at Mirro Aluminum Co., Manitowoc, and will be responsible for all phases of methods engineering, estimating and packaging. A native of Jackson, Ky., Young served four years in the U. S. Navy and managed a Western Auto Stores at Jackson before joining Mirro in 1962 in the quality control and time study areas, transferring to the methods department in 1968. The family resides at 1405 S. 19th St., Manitowoc.

Vlasta A. (Val) Miller

Vlasta A. (Val) Miller, age 92, a Manitowoc resident, died Wednesday, April 6, 2005 at St. Mary’s Home, Manitowoc. Val was born April 12, 1912 at Manitowoc, daughter of the late Joseph and Catherine (Hoslar) Cherny. She grew up in Manitowoc and graduated from Lincoln High School. For a time she was employed with the Wisconsin Telephone Company. On July 20, 1940, she married Capt. Vess R. Miller in Pascagoula, Miss. Vess preceded her in death April 4, 1960. Val enjoyed crafts, sewing, bowling, playing bingo, duplicate bridge and Las Vegas. Survivors include a daughter: Carol J. (Howard E.) Young, Manitowoc; a son: Patrick D. (Sarah J.) Miller, Manitowoc; six grandchildren: Douglas (Ann) Young, Waukesha; Rebecca (George) Novitski, Mishicot; Vess R. Miller II, Manitowoc; Bradley A. (Carol) Miller, Manitowoc; Ann M. (Brian) Hetue, Manitowoc; Bryan D. (Suzanne) Miller, Fredonia, 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
