1847 TERRITORIAL CENSUS
BYRON TOWNSHIP

Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin

The 1847 Wisconsin territorial census recorded heads of household, number of males, number of females, and total individuals in the household on December 1, 1847. The census taker for Waupun Township was Morgan L. Noble, although Fond du Lac County census results were returned to the Secretary of the Territory by S. S. N. Fuller, who signed as census taker. For the town of Byron, totals of 371 males and 280 females were submitted to the Secretary. The numbers are written on the bottom of page 22 of the Fond du Lac census and repeated on Fuller's summary sheet, so presumably they represent his calculations. However, the actual sums of pages 18 through 22 are 371 and 281 respectively. Microfilm of the original records is available at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin library (Call No. 1847-1). As illustrated, the records were hand written and in many cases are open to interpretation. An attempt is made to record entries as written, even when an entry is apparently in error. In cases where names are exceptionally difficult to read, an (?) marker is inserted. Entries are offered in the order in which they were recorded, because the census-taking sequence provides clues about where individuals actually lived.

My name is Julie Burrison Herrill and I am researching the Burrison family history. I do believe all of us Burrisons are some how related. I am presently working on the parents of John R. Burrison, B: 1787 Vermont, D:1864 Bruce County, Ontario, Canada. Married Polly Mary Johnson, B:1793 Manitoulin Island, Ontario, Canada, D: in Canada. I can trace Polly Mary Johnson four more generations, to 1642 in New Jersey.

HISTORY: John R. moved to Canada, where He and Polly were married and their seven children were born, second of which was, my GG-Grandfather James Burrison. James Married Ann Bennie in Walkerton, Ontario, Canada. They had the first six children of 11 in Canada, then then moved Grand Rapids, Mi where one more child was born, then they moved to Hinton, Mi where the next four children were born. My G-Grandfather James Wellington was the second born, He married Alice Adela Swett in Flint, Mi and had 3 children, second of which was my grandfather Oscar Earl, known as Earl. Earl moved to Montana with his Parents and siblings, where he farmed and family owned a resturant. He met my grandmother Nina McCampbell who was born in Rock Creek Montana. They had the first 2 of 5 children in Reed Pt, Montana. They moved to Long Beach California where the other 3 children were born, one of which is my father John Burrison.

I am hoping to hear from all of the Burrison descendants here. I am descended from John Johnson 1791-1865 eldest brother of your Mary (Polly) Johnson Burrison. Children of James Johnson & Margaret Redner, a Loyalist link with NJ roots. My wife is actually descended from another of Polly's sisters, Nancy 1801. Your Polly was almost certainly born in Adolphustown ON. Family moved to Ameliasburgh Tp. Prince Edward Co by 1800, and she must have met Burrison there. Later the Burrisons are in Alnwick Tp. By the way, the Johnsons, Redners and other families arrived in Upper Canada in 1791.

James JOHNSON married Margaret REDNER of Franklin Tp. Bergen Co NJ c1790. She was the dau'r of Loyalist Henry REDNER Sr. JOHNSONS, REDNERS and others moved to Canada in 1791 settling by 1800 in Ameliasburgh Tp., Prince Edward Co. Later some of the JOHNSONS moved to Hope Tp, (then part of Durham Co ON). James JOHNSON died mid-1830s. Margaret born 1772 died c1851. James thought to be same one who served in Loyalist Reg't, King's Orange Rangers during Rev War. Recently it has been learned that he came to America from Ireland. Always seeking info on this family.
